White House Bars Associated Press from Oval Office, Air Force One Over Naming Dispute
The White House has revoked press access for the Associated press (AP) to the Oval Office and Air Force One, citing the news agency’s refusal to adopt a new name for the body of water previously known as the Gulf of Mexico.
The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) has strongly condemned this action, labeling it a “very disturbing” attempt to penalize a news outlet for its reporting and a violation of the First Amendment. The WHCA, an independent body representing journalists, issued a statement denouncing the move.
This decision follows a broader shift in white House press access control initiated in February. under the new policy, the White House now directly selects which news organizations participate in press pools that cover the American president. This duty was previously held by the WHCA since 1914.
