The initial strikes, reported by Iranian media and confirmed by the White House, targeted locations across Iran, including near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump, in a video address released Saturday, announced the commencement of “major combat operations in Iran,” asserting the objective was to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.” He further urged the Iranian people to “take over your government.”
The rationale for the attacks remains fluid. Trump has offered a series of explanations, including the demand to dismantle Iran’s nuclear weapons program – a program he previously claimed to have “obliterated” last June – and the possibility of regime change. The President has at times suggested the goal is to replace the current Iranian leadership with a different hard-line Islamic ruler, while at other times advocating for a transition to democracy. Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, criticized the lack of clarity, stating, “The decision to position American servicemembers in harm’s way demands clarity, consistency, and honesty with Congress and the public. So far, we’ve got none of those things.”
The U.S. Operation was conducted in conjunction with Israel, though the extent of Israel’s involvement has not been fully disclosed.
