Trump Celebrates Robert Mueller’s Death & Russia Probe History

March 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller III died Friday, March 20, 2026, at the age of 81, according to reports confirmed Saturday. The announcement was met with a sharply critical statement from former President Donald Trump, who posted on his Truth Social platform: “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

Trump’s response appeared to reference Mueller’s role as special counsel overseeing an investigation into potential collusion between Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and the Russian government. The two-year probe, which concluded in March 2019, did not establish a criminal conspiracy, but it did result in charges against six individuals associated with Trump, including his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort.

The investigation began after then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, a decision that reportedly frustrated Trump. Throughout the investigation, Trump repeatedly characterized the probe as a “witch hunt” and a “hoax,” questioning Mueller’s impartiality and competence on social media.

The nearly 450-page Mueller report detailed numerous contacts between the Trump campaign and individuals with ties to the Russian government. Even as it did not establish a criminal conspiracy, Mueller’s team found evidence that Russia engaged in a systematic effort to interfere in the 2016 election, including hacking and disseminating damaging information about Hillary Clinton.

In a 2020 op-ed for The Washington Post, Mueller wrote, “Russia’s actions were a threat to America’s democracy.” He added that the investigation had established that the Russian government “perceived it would benefit from a Trump presidency and worked to secure that outcome,” and that the Trump campaign “expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through Russian efforts.”

Robert Mueller III served as FBI director under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, becoming the second-longest-serving director in the agency’s history. He was initially nominated by President Bush in 2001 and confirmed by a Senate vote of 98-0, taking office just days before the September 11th terrorist attacks. He reshaped the FBI into a counterterrorism force following the attacks, according to reports from PBS NewsHour.

Prior to leading the FBI, Mueller served as a Marine Corps officer and held various positions within the Department of Justice. In 2021, Mueller’s family disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, according to The New York Times.

Trump’s reaction to Mueller’s death aligns with a pattern of attacking individuals who have sought to hold him accountable, a behavior frequently observed throughout his political career. As of Saturday evening, no statement had been released by the Justice Department or the FBI regarding Mueller’s passing.
