Trump Marks Middle East Visit Amidst Tentative Gaza Ceasefire Framework
SHARM EL SHEIKH, Egypt – former President Donald Trump concluded a visit to the Middle East Monday, coinciding with ongoing negotiations for a potential ceasefire in Gaza. the visit, framed as a festivity of diplomatic progress, comes as Qatar mediates talks between Israel and Hamas regarding a proposed framework for a phased release of hostages in exchange for a pause in fighting and the release of Palestinian prisoners.
The proposed agreement, details of which remain fluid, reportedly involves hamas relinquishing control of Gaza – a concession few regional observers believe the group will fully accept. Experts suggest the Muslim Brotherhood, the political movement from which Hamas originated, could perhaps reconstitute the group should it dissolve.
Trump’s visit occurred alongside a summit of world leaders in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. The former president’s presence underscores his continued engagement in Middle Eastern affairs and his stated desire to facilitate peace agreements.
In israel, the outcome of the next phase of negotiations, alongside a delayed internal investigation into the intelligence and security failures that preceded the October 7th attacks, is expected to heavily influence upcoming elections, potentially called within the next year. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s domestic approval ratings have fluctuated throughout the conflict. Both the political left and right are anticipated to capitalize on growing public war fatigue.
Netanyahu has historically appealed to right-wing voters, a strategy that risks exacerbating tensions in the West bank, where Israeli settlement expansion continues.Such escalation could jeopardize Trump’s peace efforts, mirroring past cycles of conflict.
“Israelis will fear Hamas would dominate a Palestinian state, and that is why disarmament of Hamas and reform of the [Palestinian Authority] are so crucial. Having Saudi leaders reach out to the israeli public would help,” said dennis Ross,a veteran U.S. diplomat specializing in the region.
Ross emphasized the need to halt the “creeping annexation” and settlement expansion in the West Bank, as well as address violence perpetrated by extremist settlers.
Prior to October 7th, Netanyahu faced criticism for policies perceived as strengthening Hamas at the expense of the Palestinian Authority. the ultimate success of Trump’s peace plan may hinge on Netanyahu’s approach to peace negotiations during the election cycle.
“You are committed to this peace,” Netanyahu stated Monday, alongside Trump in the knesset. “I am committed to this peace.”
