Trump Approval Ratings Hit New Lows as Concerns Over Economy and Policy Grow

August 17, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 33%, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, marking the lowest level of his presidency. This decline follows a broader trend of weakening public support as the administration approaches its 100-day milestone, with polling data from CNN and SSRS placing his approval at 41%—the lowest for any newly elected president at the 100-day mark dating back at least to Dwight Eisenhower.

Economic Policy and Public Sentiment

The drop in approval is closely tied to public dissatisfaction with the president’s economic agenda. According to CNN, approval of Trump’s handling of the economy has fallen to 39%, a career low. Data indicates that the rollout of the administration’s tariff plan has contributed to stock market volatility and increased concerns regarding inflation. Public confidence in the president’s ability to manage economic issues has seen a sharp decline, dropping 13 points since December, with only 52% of respondents now expressing confidence in his economic management.

Institutional Challenges and Administrative Oversight

Beyond economic indicators, the administration faces declining marks for its management of the federal government. CNN reports that 42% of Americans approve of Trump’s management of federal operations, a 6-point decrease since March. Additionally, confidence in the president’s ability to appoint the best people to office has slipped to 46%.

The survey findings suggest a deepening divide regarding the administration’s approach to governance. While 43% of respondents view the current presidential actions as a necessary “shake-up” of Washington, 57% characterize the approach as one that unnecessarily puts the country at risk.

Partisan Polarization and Independent Voters

The polling data highlights a consistent partisan divide, with 86% of Republicans approving of the president’s performance, compared to 93% of Democrats who disapprove. Among political independents, approval has dipped to 31%, matching the president’s first-term low point with that group.

Notable shifts in sentiment have also appeared within specific voter groups. Since March, approval ratings among women and Hispanic Americans have each dropped by 7 percentage points, falling to 36% and 28% respectively.

Foreign Affairs and Immigration

The administration’s foreign policy, characterized by a more friendly posture toward Russia in its war with Ukraine and ending many foreign aid programs, currently draws 60% disapproval. Confidence in the president’s handling of foreign affairs has fallen to 50%, down from 55% before he took office.

On the issue of immigration, where the president had previously seen higher marks, approval has also declined. CNN reports that 45% of the public now approves of his handling of immigration, a 6-point drop from March, while confidence in his ability to manage the issue has fallen to 53%.
