Trump Administration Revokes Over 175,000 Visas in Sweeping Immigration Crackdown

August 11, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The U.S. According to the State Department, the sweeping cancellations target foreign nationals who violated visa terms, committed crimes, called for violence, defrauded Americans, or endangered national security.

The Scope of Visa Revocations and Criminal Case Inclusions

The vast majority of the 175,000 revoked travel and immigration privileges stemmed from law enforcement encounters, according to the State Department. Federal officials cited assault, driving under the influence, theft, and drug crimes as the leading causes for the cancellations. A significant share of the total also involved reckless driving, sexual assault, child abuse, fraud, embezzlement, and other offenses.

Among the individual cases highlighted by the State Department without identifying information were foreign nationals charged with felony rape and sexual battery, kidnapping and human trafficking, domestic violence, and sodomy of a child. Another instance involved an individual arrested for driving with heroin and a blood alcohol level exceeding three times the legal limit.

Political Expressions and Foreign Policy Groundings

Beyond criminal offenses, the State Department targeted foreign nationals based on online speech and foreign policy objectives. Officials confirmed the revocation of multiple visas belonging to individuals who celebrated the September assassination of conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau noted on social media in the wake of the killing that foreign visitors who glorify violence and hatred do not align with U.S. national security interests.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also identified numerous foreign nationals deemed deportable on foreign policy grounds. These included a Cuban national connected to a Cuban communist regime influence operation, Iranian nationals linked to the Iranian regime, a Laotian child sex offender, and a Kuwaiti national who called for violence against the U.S.

Birth Tourism and International Student Visa Reductions

The crackdown has extended beyond criminal and political classifications into birth tourism and academia. In North Africa, a U.S. embassy revoked more than 100 visas belonging to birth tourist parents who intended to give birth in the U.S. to secure citizenship status for their children. This action accompanies ongoing executive efforts by the Trump administration to restrict birthright citizenship, despite the Supreme Court previously striking down executive attempts to alter Fourteenth Amendment protections.

Concurrently, the administration has intensified scrutiny of academic institutions. According to a State Department official, the administration has revoked more than 6,000 student visas for overstays and legal infractions. While the vast majority of these 6,000 student cancellations involved assault, driving under the influence, or burglary, a small minority—ranging from 200 to 300 visas—were canceled for alleged support for terrorism under the State Department’s Foreign Affairs Manual.
