Motorway Incident Sparks Regional Emergency Response
According to updates released by the Guardia Civil and the regional forestry management department via the Plan Infoex, a commercial truck caught fire while in transit.
A thick column of dark smoke billowed over the major transport artery, compromising visibility and threatening immediate infrastructure. With the fire advancing aggressively toward residential perimeters, the regional government elevated the emergency status to Level 1.
Evacuations and Traffic Disruption in Rural Caceres
Local authorities moved swiftly to secure human life. Security forces ordered the complete evacuation of Casas de Millán, a municipality with a population of approximately 530 residents, alongside the smaller settlement of Grimaldo, home to roughly 70 people. Evacuees faced sudden displacement as emergency coordinators moved to protect citizens from toxic smoke inhalation and the erratic path of the flames.
The disruption also choked regional transit. Law enforcement restricted normal traffic flow to prioritize emergency vehicle access and clear the danger zone, stranding motorists and freight haulers alike.
Massive Aerial and Terrestrial Deployment Combats the Front
The firefighting strategy relies on an overwhelming multi-agency response. The Plan Infoex mobilized a striking air fleet consisting of 13 total aircraft—specifically four planes and nine heavy-lift helicopters—making continuous water drops over the primary heads of the fire. These aerial maneuvers aim to suppress the most intense flare-ups in areas inaccessible to wheeled vehicles.
On the ground, four dedicated forest firefighting units coordinate with two specialized helitransported brigades. The physical labor is supplemented by a natural environment agent, a designated extinction technician, and heavy machinery tasked with carving out strategic firebreaks. This inter-agency task force combines resources from the Plan Infoex, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and the Provincial Fire Service of Cáceres.
