Troy University Reaches Peak Accreditation, Signaling Rise as a Doctoral Research Institution
Troy, AL – Troy University has achieved the highest level of accreditation possible, reaching Level VI classification from the Southern Association of colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). This milestone, triggered by the launch of its fourth doctoral program – a Ph.D.in criminology this fall – underscores the university’s critically important evolution into a comprehensive doctoral institution.
SACSCOC, Troy University’s regional accrediting body, bases its institutional ranking on the highest degree level offered. Wiht the addition of the Criminology Ph.D., joining existing doctoral programs in Nursing Practice (2010), Sport Management (2017), and Global leadership (2020), Troy University now stands at the pinnacle of academic classification.
“This is a defining moment for Troy University,” stated Chancellor Dr.Jack Hawkins, Jr. “From our roots as a teacher’s college,we’ve consistently pursued growth and excellence. Achieving Level VI isn’t just a recognition of past accomplishments; it’s a launchpad for even greater achievements, fueled by the dedication of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni.”
The university has already seen ample success with its doctoral programs, having graduated over 230 students and currently enrolling more than 500 across all four disciplines.
Faculty innovation was specifically highlighted as a key driver of this success. Dr. Mary Anne Templeton, Associate Provost for Academics, lauded the faculty’s commitment to developing cutting-edge programs. “Their vision and willingness to push boundaries have positioned Troy University among the nation’s leading institutions,” she said.
This SACSCOC advancement comes on the heels of other recent accolades, including recognition as a Doctoral University in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications and a Carnegie Research University – a designation reserved for smaller institutions demonstrating significant research contributions. An instructional role change approved by the Alabama Commission on higher Education in 2023 further paved the way for expanded doctoral offerings.
Looking ahead, Troy University aims to build on this momentum and achieve R2 research institution status. “This SACSCOC recognition is a crucial step in our journey,” explained Dr. Kerry Palmer, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. “we are dedicated to expanding our research enterprise and fostering a culture of discovery that will benefit both our academic reputation and the communities we serve.”
