Trine University Theatre will present a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, titled “Midsummer/Jersey,” with performances scheduled for March 26, 27, and 28. The production, set on the boardwalk of a New Jersey seaside town, reimagines the classic comedy with a pop music soundtrack and a focus on contemporary relationships.
The play centers on the impending wedding of the governor of New Jersey and the romantic entanglements of four high school students. A group of mischievous fairies and the staff of a local beauty salon, run by Patti Quince and stylist Nikki Bottom, further complicate the narrative. Oberon and Puck introduce a love potion, causing chaos and confusion among the characters.
Lou Ann Homan, a lecturer at Trine University, is directing the production, with Lydia Roop, the university’s assistant director of student engagement, leadership and service, serving as her assistant. Homan and Roop initially conceived of the spring show with several ideas in mind, according to a statement from Roop.
The cast includes students from diverse academic programs within Trine University, including engineering, education, psychology, cybersecurity, and design technology. Performances will be held at Trine University, with tickets priced at $10 for the general public and $5 for students aged 5-17. Admission is free for Trine students, and employees.
Tickets are available for purchase at trine.edu/furthtickets or at the door. The Trine Theatre program operates as part of the university’s Department of Humanities and Communication.
