Trezeguet Reveals Lippi Once Tried to Trade Him for Vieri, Recalls Deep Bond with Del Piero
Bari, Italy – Juventus legend David Trezeguet recounted a surprising early clash with former coach Marcello lippi and reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to the club, speaking at an event hosted by the Juventus Official Fan Club of Bari “Spirito Gobbo Bari Gianluca Vialli” last night.
Trezeguet detailed how Lippi initially preferred Christian Vieri and attempted to engineer a trade for the striker when he first arrived at Juventus. “He didn’t want me,he wanted Vieri,so he asked the company to enforce an exchange of cards,” Trezeguet explained. “Then for a series of reasons the two clubs were unable to find the agreement and I remained.” the initial relationship was tense, but a playful wager changed everything. “The first week was in the name of nervousness between the two of us. Then one day he came to me and he told me that if I had scored more than 30 goals I would have to give him a gift. Or else he would have done it to me. That year in the end I did 38. I hope he still has the watch I bought him…”
The event, a journey through Trezeguet’s Juventus career, also saw the Franco-Argentine forward fondly remember his partnership with Alex Del Piero. He highlighted the badges won alongside his teammate and celebrated memorable Champions League nights.
Trezeguet emphasized his commitment to Juventus even after the club’s relegation to Serie B, a decision he considers the most important of his career. “Juve was my life: there I wrote my story. Staying in Turin even after relegation I think it represented the most important moment of my career. The company gave us the possibility to leave, but I didn’t want to. I felt the need to reciprocate the love of the club.” He expressed frustration over the revoked titles, stating, “Unfortunately, they took away some badges despite having gained them on the field. We have proven to be the strongest, the most important team and yet it went as it went.”
When asked about his most cherished goal,Trezeguet didn’t hesitate: “Easy: that of May 5th.” – a reference to the decisive goal in the 2005 Serie A title win, later stripped from the club’s record.
