Travis Perry,Kentucky’s all-time leading high school scorer, made a surprising decision last offseason: he opted not to join the University of Kentucky (UK) men’s basketball team despite initially committing to walk-on status. Perry, who finished his high school career with a remarkable 4,543 points (Kentucky Sports Radio), initially announced his intention to pursue a spot with the Wildcats in May 2023.

The decision to forgo his chance with UK came after Perry received critically important interest from other programs offering guaranteed scholarship opportunities. Ultimately,he committed to Western Kentucky University (WKU) in November 2023, where he is expected to contribute immediately and has a clear path to playing time. WKYT News reported that Perry’s decision was driven by the desire for a more prominent role and a guaranteed scholarship.

Perry’s high school accolades are extensive. He led Lyon County High School to a state championship in 2022 and was a two-time Kentucky mr. Basketball award winner (Courier Journal). His scoring record surpassed that of previous Kentucky high school basketball legends, generating considerable excitement among UK fans when he initially committed to the program.

He will now begin his collegiate career at WKU, where he is poised to make an immediate impact for the Hilltoppers.
