Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – Transmigration Minister M.Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara announced that three regional governments have formally requested the placement of transmigrants within their territories. These regions include West Sulawesi Province,Sidrap District, and South Sulawesi Province, each proposing a demographic balance of 70 percent local residents and 30 percent new inhabitants.
“Our focus is on inclusive and lasting advancement that generates employment opportunities and aligns with the vision of a Golden Indonesia 2045,” Minister Suryanagara stated during a press conference at the National Transmigration Technical Working Meeting in Bali on Monday.
The minister highlighted the sustained high public interest in the transmigration program, with approximately eight thousand families having registered. He further elaborated that the placement process is now more selective, driven by the specific requests of the destination regions. This includes areas like South Papua, where the prioritization of Indigenous Papuans (OAP) is a key consideration.
“The placement of new transmigrants is contingent upon an official request from the regional government of the destination area,” Suryanagara clarified. He emphasized that modern transmigration transcends mere relocation, aiming instead to channel skilled human resources to bolster local economic growth.
Citing Law No. 29 of 2009, Suryanagara reiterated that regions cannot be designated as transmigration locations without the explicit request of their local governments. “If there is no demand, there will be no transmigrants,” he asserted.
the minister also pointed to the substantial development opportunities present in transmigration areas and commended the supportive role of local governments in the program. As an example, he mentioned the initiative to foster sugarcane cultivation and sugar factories in East Sumba, underscoring the critical importance of central and regional government coordination. “We anticipate that this working meeting will yield valuable insights and contributions to enhance the future impact of transmigration,” he added.
The National Transmigration Technical Working Meeting, held from July 27-30, convened all relevant regional governments and their apparatus organizations (OPD) involved in transmigration. The event also featured the signing of a cross-sectoral cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening the transmigration ecosystem.
