Traditional Medicine Hospital Improves Musculoskeletal Care for Seniors in Lao Cai Province
The Tuyen Quang Provincial Traditional Medicine Hospital is seeing a surge in elderly patients seeking treatment for musculoskeletal disorders, with the facility now treating over 300 patients during peak hours, according to Dr. Nguyen Huong Sen, head of the hospital’s internal medicine and pediatrics department.
The increase reflects a broader trend of musculoskeletal issues affecting Vietnam’s aging population. According to Santé publique France, these disorders primarily manifest as pain and functional impairment, frequently impacting the back and upper limbs, affecting joints, muscles and tendons. The hospital is responding by integrating modern medical techniques with traditional Vietnamese practices to improve patient outcomes.
“Previously, the hospital prioritized methods of traditional medicine,” Dr. Nguyen Huong Sen stated. “Now, we are focusing on strengthening the in-depth training of our medical staff in both traditional and modern medicine. The hospital has invested more in modern medical facilities and equipment to support advanced diagnostics and treatments.”
The hospital’s approach now includes techniques such as joint puncture, intra-articular injections, and injections into periarticular soft tissues – used for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome and De Quervain’s tenosynovitis – alongside traditional methods like acupuncture, massage, and acupressure. These traditional therapies are being used to optimize treatment effectiveness, reduce pain, improve mobility, and limit recurrence of conditions.
One patient, Vi Van Hong from Lao Cai province, reported significant improvement after just seven days of treatment for lower back pain that had previously required a wheelchair. “Before coming to the hospital, I suffered from lower back pain radiating into my legs, preventing me from standing or walking normally,” Hong said. “However, after only 7 days of treatment, the pain has decreased significantly, and I can now stand and walk more easily.”
Nguyen Thuy Do, also from Lao Cai province, shared a similar experience. “Before coming to the hospital, I was in a lot of pain and had difficulty walking. But after 5 days of treatment, the pain has decreased significantly, and I can walk more easily. I am highly satisfied with the dedication of the doctors and medical staff.”
Early in 2026, the hospital introduced a modern multi-position hyperbaric oxygen therapy system, offering a new treatment option for patients. This therapy is proving effective for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, herniated discs, sciatica, and cervical brachial syndrome, by improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and promoting motor function recovery. Dr. Huong Sen explained that hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood, which helps oxygenate damaged tissues, reduce inflammation and edema, and stimulate the formation of new blood vessels, aiding cartilage regeneration.
The hospital has also focused on creating a comfortable and accessible environment for patients, including waiting areas with stone salt foot baths designed to promote relaxation and reduce fatigue. These amenities are intended to provide a sense of security and comfort during their stay.
