Trade Republic opens waiting list for zero-fee pension depot
Online broker Trade Republic has opened the waiting list for its state-backed retirement pension depot, launching a free standard option that undercuts established banks on fees as federal lawmakers prepare to replace the Riester pension system in January 2027.
Trade Republic Undercuts Competitors with Zero-Fee Pension Depot
Online broker Trade Republic has perfected its marketing by introducing a zero-fee structure for its newly unveiled Altersvorsorgedepot, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported. While several traditional banks have already introduced offers for the state-backed retirement depot, Trade Republic took its time before entering the market with a model that charges no fees for the depot itself or for trade execution, while also waiving management fees on selected exchange-traded funds.
The company has successfully pressured established banks over the years and made stock trading affordable for small savers. Yet the offering functions similarly to a classic marketing entry tactic, much like a low-cost hot dog or a free eye test. It serves as a low-threshold hook designed to attract new customers in the hope that they will stay and purchase more expensive products.
State Subsidies and the Push Toward Capital Markets
The federal government is promoting personal contributions to the new retirement depot of up to 1,800 euros per year, translating to 150 euros a month. The state adds matching funds up to this specific limit, but contributes nothing beyond it. Handelsblatt reported that the federal government’s legislation paves the way for capital market-based private provision that abolishes mandatory nominal value guarantees, allowing state-supported investments in broadly diversified ETFs and funds without expensive insurance wrappers.
Trade Republic has opened its waiting list to link these state subsidies and tax advantages directly to its platform. Customers without an existing profile can open a free account in minutes to prepare for the launch. The Berlin-based broker has expanded from an investment application into a full bank serving millions of customers across Europe, actively lobbying to open capital market access for everyone.
Structural Comparison of Pension Models
The shift from traditional insurance products to the new capital-market model alters the cost structure and investment freedom for German savers.
| Feature | Riester-Rente | Altersvorsorgedepot |
|---|---|---|
| Guarantee | 100% mandatory contribution guarantee | No mandatory guarantee (higher return potential) |
| Maximum Basic Subsidy | 175 euros per year | 540 euros per year |
| Investment Vehicle | Mostly expensive insurance products | ETFs, funds, bonds (no individual stocks or crypto) |
| Costs | High distribution and management fees (2% to 3% annually, no ceiling) | Low; zero in Trade Republic’s standard variant and select ETFs |
The Open Question Facing Savers
The state-backed depot brings millions of citizens into the stock market who previously stayed away. Some participants will discover that they have additional capital to invest outside of the retirement depot, prompting them to purchase individual stocks and ETFs.
The official start date for the new retirement depot arrives on January 1, 2027, replacing the Riester-Rente.
