Toxic Algae Bloom Warning Issued for Wall Lake, South Dakota

August 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Wall Lake is currently under a harmful algae warning after state officials identified a toxic algae bloom at the lake, according to the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Dakota News Now.

Understanding South Dakota’s Recurring Summer Algae Challenges

During the summer months in South Dakota, finding a lakeshore blanketed by a slimy, green, and occasionally foul-smelling layer of algae is a frequent occurrence. According to South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks, state agencies receive many calls every summer with concerns about the safety of recreating in and around these algae-laden waters. The central questions for the public consistently revolve around whether it is safe to swim, boat, let pets swim, or allow livestock to drink from affected lakes.

While Game, Fish and Parks often serves as the initial point of contact for reporting algal blooms, the agency notes that the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources maintains the technical experts responsible for monitoring harmful algal blooms. The DANR maintains a dedicated webpage providing guidance on the causes, reporting procedures, safety precautions, and health effects associated with these environmental events.

Public Safety Protocols and Reporting Procedures

State officials emphasize that when individuals witness what they believe to be a harmful algal bloom, the first, and most important action they can take is to protect people, pets, and livestock by ensuring they stay out of the water. As state guidance stresses, when in doubt, stay out. Because laboratory analysis is required to determine whether an algal bloom is toxic, practicing caution remains the most prudent approach.

For those who need to report a suspected bloom, the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources accepts reports by email or by phone at 605-773-3623. Furthermore, officials request that individuals contact their local Area Fisheries Supervisor or Aquatic Habitat and Access Biologist if they notice dead fish in association with the bloom.

Agricultural and Economic Impacts Across the Region

Livestock owners face risks during the summer months, as ingestion of toxin-laden water can be a concern for cattle. While fish caught from affected waters are generally considered safe to eat, state guidelines recommend limiting consumption if a bloom has recently occurred.
