Toronto City council Approves New Bylaw too Protect Tenants from Eviction
Toronto, ON – In a significant victory for renters, Toronto City Council has passed a new bylaw aimed at providing greater protection against evictions. The legislation, set to take effect on July 31st, is being hailed as a crucial step towards ensuring housing stability and empowering tenants.
“This is a fight for dignity, for stability and also for tenant power.Together we are stronger, together we will win,” stated one advocate at a recent press conference, underscoring the collective effort behind the new protections.
Michael Cuadra,co-chair of ACORN‘s Weston chapter, echoed this sentiment, describing the bylaw as a “welcome sigh of relief,of protection.” ACORN,a community union representing low and moderate-income individuals, emphasizes the power of collective action. “Alone we can be deceived. Alone, we can be ignored. Together we can be heard, together we can solve problems,” Cuadra remarked.
despite this progress, challenges remain in the housing sector. Douglas Kwan, director of advocacy and legal services in Ontario for the Advocacy Centre for Tenants, noted that lengthy wait times at Landlord and Tenant Board hearings persist. He also highlighted the ongoing decline in the province’s affordable housing supply
