Tornado Tears Through Long Island Beach Club Leaving Damage and State of Emergency

August 21, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A suspected tornado struck the Sun and Surf Beach Club in Atlantic Beach, Nassau County, on Thursday evening, August 20, 2026, causing significant structural damage to at least 30 cabanas. The event, which occurred amid a broader regional storm system, prompted Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman to declare a state of emergency.

The Impact of the Storm on Atlantic Beach

The destructive weather event began as a waterspout spotted off the South Shore of Long Island around 6:45 p.m. Witnesses and video footage indicate the spout moved inland, transitioning into a tornado as it crossed the shoreline. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tornado warning for the area effective from 6:45 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. as the system tracked across the region.

At the Sun and Surf Beach Club, the impact was immediate. Matthew Stark, a 28-year-old local resident and club member who was present during the event, described the transition from heavy rain to structural failure. “As I was closing the door to the cabana, you heard and felt the whoosh of the gusts of wind, and it ripped the roof right off,” Stark stated. The debris, including wood and patio furniture, was scattered across the sand as the tornado moved through the boardwalk area.

According to the Nassau County fire marshal, one worker sustained a minor injury but declined medical transport. Search teams were mobilized to ensure no other individuals remained trapped within the debris of the damaged cabanas. Property damage was also reported at the nearby Silver Point Beach Club.

Infrastructure and Regional Emergency Response

The incident was part of a larger, low-pressure system that generated severe flash flooding across the New York City tri-state area. The New York City Office of Emergency Management had issued a travel advisory earlier in the day, warning of wind gusts reaching 65 mph. These conditions resulted in significant transit disruptions, with reports of motorists trapped in high water on Cherry Valley Avenue, the West Hempstead Turnpike, and North Central Avenue in Valley Stream.

In response to the widespread flooding and the tornado damage, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency.

Assessing the Meteorological Data

While the National Weather Service has not yet issued a final confirmation of a touchdown, crews are scheduled to visit Atlantic Beach and Rockaway Beach on Friday to perform a damage assessment. The NWS noted that the footage captured in East Atlantic Beach is consistent with a waterspout, which is a tornado that forms over a body of water. If the NWS confirms the rotation remained active upon landfall, it will be officially classified as a tornado.

The storm system’s reach extended beyond New York; the Dover Police Department in Delaware also declared a state of emergency following a confirmed tornado touchdown in that city. The pattern of heavy rain and localized wind damage reflects the intensity of the low-pressure system as it moved east across the region.

Navigating Post-Disaster Recovery

By Friday morning, many roads that had been submerged by flash flooding began to clear, though some areas remained under elevated water levels.
