Cara Evans Reaches Semifinals After Dominant Run
In the Class 2A division, Montrose’s Cara Evans and Scranton Prep’s Lily Lengyel sailed through their early draws without surrendering a single game. Evans, the reigning PIAA Class 2A champion, held her No. 1 seed by defeating Dunmore’s Sascha Novak, Wallenpaupack’s Mia Ezzo, and Scranton Prep’s Adithi Velaga by identical 6-0, 6-0 margins. She advances to face fifth-seeded Catlin Finn of Dallas, who earned her semifinal spot by overcoming Lizzie Weaver of Wyoming Seminary 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals after earlier tournament action that included Molly Kratz of Wyoming Area defeating Alicia Wertman of Western Wayne 6-0, 6-0.
On the other side of the 2A bracket, No. 2 seed Lily Lengyel duplicated Evans’ flawless path. Lengyel dismissed Dallas’s Abby Worth and Holy Redeemer’s CeCe Pons 6-0, 6-0 before cruising past Mid Valley’s Regan Buranich in the quarterfinals, a round reached by Buranich following a 1-6, 7-5, 14-12 victory over Alex Jacobs of Wyoming Area. Lengyel now faces freshman and third-seeded Avery Orozco of MMI Prep. Orozco advanced past Madelyn McClure and Elizabeth Rich before surviving a fiercely contested quarterfinal against Montrose’s Anna Evans, taking the first set 6-4, dropping the second 4-6, and grinding out a 7-6 (3) tiebreaker victory in the third set, with earlier preliminary competition featuring Olivia Kogan of Wallenpaupack defeating Madyson Mace of Holy Cross 3-6, 6-4, 10-4.
