Perpignan Rugby club Faces Potential Stadium Closure After Fan Disruptions
Perpignan, France – USAP (Union Sportive Perpignan Arlequins) is bracing for potential disciplinary action after a supporter invaded the pitch and beer was thrown during a heated match against Racing 92 this Saturday. The incident, occurring during a scuffle between players in the final minutes of the game (which Racing 92 won 15-28), has raised concerns about recurring fan behaviour and could lead to a stadium suspension and further fines for the Catalan club.
The pitch invasion, though quickly contained by security, came as players were already involved in a second altercation, resulting in yellow cards for Noah Della Schiava of Perpignan and Fabien Sanconnie of Racing 92. Together, multiple projectiles – specifically, beer – were thrown from the stands onto the field.
This isn’t an isolated incident for USAP. Just this past June, during the crucial promotion/relegation match against Grenoble, supporters from both sides engaged in violent clashes. Following that event, Perpignan was found guilty of “Disorders caused by players, managers and/or the public” – specifically citing “disorders caused in the sporting grounds…fight(s), jet(s) of object(s) on or off the field.” The club was then handed a one-match stadium suspension and a €25,000 fine.
History of Trouble
This latest incident could trigger a re-evaluation of that suspended stadium ban. The league may decide to enforce the original suspension, forcing Perpignan to play their next home game, October 4th against Stade Français, behind closed doors (“in camera”).
The National rugby League (LNR) has demonstrated a zero-tolerance policy towards disruptive fan behavior. In 2024, Perpignan was already fined €15,000 after referee Jérémy Rozier was subjected to abuse and insults following a match against Clermont.
A Pattern of Frustration
While the motivations behind the recent disruptions remain unclear, the incidents point to a growing frustration among some USAP supporters. the club now faces a critical juncture, needing to address security concerns and fan conduct to avoid further sanctions that could impact their performance and financial stability. The LNR is expected to announce its decision regarding further disciplinary action in the coming days.
