The End of a 35-Year Era in Happy Valley

Randy Jepson’s contract was not renewed following a 35-year run as head coach and 45 total years with the program, per Penn State Athletics. Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Pat Kraft noted that Jepson compiled nearly 450 career victories, won three national championships, and earned three National Coach of the Year honors in 2000, 2004, and 2007. Jepson stands as the only Penn State head coach besides Gene Wettstone to win a team national title.

During his tenure, Jepson coached eight Olympians, mentored three Nissen-Emery Award winners, developed 139 NCAA All-America honorees, and guided 14 individual national champions. That legacy includes Mark Sohn, the first gymnast in NCAA history to win four consecutive national titles on the pommel horse. Alongside athletic accomplishments, Jepson prioritized academics, posting a program record-high semester GPA of 3.56 and a cumulative 3.35 team GPA in fall 2024, before improving the cumulative mark to 3.55 in 2025 according to university records.

Tony Beck steps into the top job after serving as associate head coach and building a deep history with the university. A native of Pennsylvania who competed for the Lehigh Valley Sports Academy, Beck’s competitive background includes finishing sixth on the floor exercise and eleventh in the all-around at the junior-level Visa championships. On the national stage, he finished fourth on parallel bars in 2010, ninth on pommel horse at the 2011 NCAA Championship, and sixth on high bars in his 2013 senior campaign, according to Gymnastics Digest.

Beck’s relationship with Jepson evolved from coach-athlete to coaching partner. He assisted Jepson in coaching the Nittany Lions to the 2015 Big Ten Team Championship, the 2019 conference title, and the program’s first-ever regular-season conference title in 2025, per GoPSUSports. Kraft highlighted Beck’s credentials, noting that as an assistant, Beck helped build a premier program contributing to three individual NCAA titles, 27 All-America honors, and two coached Olympians.
