Žalgiris Coach Emphasizes Team Focus After Derby Win, Addresses Player Health & League Dynamics
Kaunas, Lithuania - Following Žalgiris kaunas’ victory in teh Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) derby, head coach Tomas Masiulis downplayed personal connections during the game, stating, “We had a plan for how to defend against him, how to defend against others. We did our job, and when the game comes, family matters fall by the wayside.” The comment alludes to facing opponents with personal ties, though specifics weren’t disclosed.
Masiulis addressed multiple topics in a post-game press conference, ranging from player progress to broader basketball geopolitics. He highlighted his satisfaction with Gytis Masiulis’ progress while playing for Ryte Vilnius, noting, ”I know that he feels great in that city and in the team. He found his place, and when he’s happy, I’m happy for him.”
The coach also responded to recent commentary from Lithuanian President gitanas Nausėda regarding the strength of the Euroleague and the upcoming NBA Europe draft. Masiulis, a veteran of the Euroleague himself – having played 25 years ago – affirmed its continued prominence, stating, “It was the strongest tournament in Europe then, and now… the Euroleague remains the strongest. We are glad that the president has a similar opinion.” He clarified he has no influence over decisions regarding the draft or league structure.
Looking ahead, Masiulis identified Friday’s Euroleague match against Valencia as a key test, stating, “Our true face will appear in the match against Valencia… when the highest caliber team will arrive.” He acknowledged recent challenges for Euroleague rivals Barcelona and ASVEL due to injuries.
Regarding player availability, Masiulis confirmed Ignas Brazdeikis was granted limited time off following the birth of his son, noting his parents are assisting with childcare. “If he had asked, we would have given him more days off, but I think a few days is enough,” Masiulis said, adding Brazdeikis “played well and once again showed that we need him.”
The coach indicated a return for Nigel Williams-Goss against Valencia is “very small” due to a muscle injury, emphasizing the need for complete recovery.
