Tomás Ferrandiz claimed first place at the Andes Talleres Open

Tomás Ferrandiz claimed first place at the Andes Talleres Open

October 12, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

San Juan judoka Tomás Ferrandiz claimed first place in his category at the Andes Talleres Open Judo Tournament in Mendoza, locking in a vital preparatory milestone as he charges into a demanding double-competition schedule to close out the 2026 sports calendar.

Golden Triumph in Mendoza

The regional tournament provided essential mat time just weeks before high-stakes national and international showdowns. Ferrandiz is now sharpening his focus for the upcoming National Clausura Tournament. That domestic championship runs from November 19 through 22 right here in San Juan, where the national title in his division hangs in the balance.

International Stage Beckons in Mexico

The pace accelerates immediately after the domestic final. The schedule shifts internationally to Quinta Roo, Mexico, for the Cancun 2026 Youth Pan American Games for categories A and B on November 28 and 29.

San Juan Athletes Prepare for Mexico Trip

Training sessions continue under the oversight of the San Juan Judo Federation and the Sports Secretariat. November serves as the critical window for peak periodization. Alongside athletic preparation, funding efforts remain active to cover travel expenses for the trip to Mexico.

Dominance Across the Delegation

Ferrandiz was far from alone on the podium. The broader San Juan delegation delivered strong results under the direction of professor Luis Meritello, capturing the team championship ahead of the National University of Cuyo in second place and Andes Talleres in third.

Individual Medals Highlight Depth

Individual titles in Mendoza went to Benicio Navarro, Juanjo Cabrera, Santiago Rosas, Agustín Rosas, Jeremías Fernández, and Milton Manrique. Winning runner-up finishes were Simón Dávila, Carlos Bustos, and Martín Rosas. Meanwhile, the team competition squad featured Santiago Rosas, Mateo Dávila, Augusto Fager, Agustín Rosas, and Jeremías Fernández.

The San Juan Judo Federation now shifts focus entirely toward hosting and competing in the upcoming National Clausura Tournament, which will bring together top competitors from across the country in mid-November to conclude the 2026 competitive season.
