Tom Stoltman: From Bullied Kid to World’s Strongest Man

Tom Stoltman was a skinny kid: 90kg, 6ft 8in, with glasses and‍ sticking‑out teeth. Diagnosed with⁣ autism as a young child, he⁣ felt he didn’t fit in. “I was really shy,” he ‌says. “I got bullied in school for⁤ being different.” Back then, the boy ‌from Invergordon didn’t like what he saw in the mirror. He⁢ lived in baggy hoodies. “Hood⁢ up.That was my comfort.” He loved⁣ football⁢ but “I used to look ‌at people on the pitch and think,‘He’s ⁣tinier than me,but he’s pushing me off the ball.’”

By 16‌ he’d hit a “crashing‌ point”. he went from football-obsessed to ⁣playing Xbox all day. He’d skip meals in favour of sweets.“Sometimes it was four or ‍five, six bags.”

It was Stoltman’s older brother Luke who got ⁣him out of the rut. A bodybuilder at ⁤the ⁣time, he dragged Tom to the gym and taught him the basics. “he saw something in me that I didn’t see myself,” Tom says.“he said, ‘You’re strong, you just need to learn how to use it.’”

Luke, ⁤now Tom’s ‌coach, devised a plan. It wasn’t about aesthetics. It was about finding something Tom enjoyed, something that would build his confidence. They started with strongman training – ‌lifting Atlas stones, pulling lorries, tossing cabers. “I loved it straight away,” Tom says. “It ⁢was just me ⁤against‌ the weight. There was no ⁣one to blame, no one to push me off the ball.”

The transformation was remarkable.‍ Tom gained weight, muscle, and, crucially, self-belief. ‍He‍ discovered a talent for strongman,‌ quickly progressing through ⁣the ranks.‍ He won Scotland’s Strongest Man in 2019, then Britain’s Strongest Man⁤ in 2020 and 2021.In 2021, he stunned the world by winning the world’s Strongest ⁤man title,‌ becoming the first Briton to do so in 27 years. He defended his title in 2022 and again in 2023,cementing his place as a dominant force in the sport.

“Winning World’s Strongest Man⁤ was unbelievable,” ‌Tom says. “It wasn’t just about the trophy. It was about proving to myself that I could do something special. It was about showing other kids who feel different that they can ⁣achieve anything they set their minds to.”

Tom is now a role model for many, especially those⁣ on the autism spectrum. He speaks openly about his diagnosis, hoping to raise awareness and challenge stigmas. He’s also a passionate advocate for mental health, encouraging‍ people to seek help when they need it.

“I still have my struggles,” Tom admits.“But I’ve learned to embrace my differences. I’m proud to be ‌autistic. It’s part of what makes me who I am.” He’s‌ no longer the⁣ shy boy hiding ⁣under a hoodie. He’s Tom Stoltman, the world’s strongest man, ⁣and he’s inspiring a generation.
