Tom holland Reveals Family Concerns Over Viral “Umbrella” Performance – Actor Tom Holland recently shared the story behind his unexpected 2017 performance of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” on the Spike TV show *Lip Sync Battle*,detailing initial plans for a low-key appearance with then-girlfriend Zendaya and his grandmother’s contribution to the iconic costume.

Holland recounted the experience during an appearance on Gordon Ramsay’s YouTube series, “Scrambled,” providing a behind-the-scenes look at the elaborate rendition. The performance, available for viewing here, began as a seemingly customary performance of “Singin’ in the Rain” before dramatically transitioning into Rihanna’s 2007 hit. The switch involved Holland quickly changing into a dress, fishnet stockings, and a wig, complete with a simulated rain shower. Zendaya was present in the audience during the taping, which occurred at Stage 19 in Los Angeles, California.

Initially,Holland and Zendaya had agreed to a more subdued approach. “It’s so funny, Zendaya and I, we were chatting at the time about what we were gonna do, and we had agreed that we would take it easy,” Holland explained. “That was the agreement, that it was like, ‘I’m not gonna do anything crazy, you’re not gonna do anything crazy, we’re just gonna keep it nice and easy breezy.'”

however, as Holland collaborated with the show’s creative team, the performance evolved into something far more ambitious. “When I was working with the creative team coming up with the ideas, they kind of pitched this ‘umbrella’ thing, and as we were rehearsing, it got crazier and crazier,” he said. “And then the rain machine came in. And then I was like, ‘Fuck it, I wanna wear fishnets and do this, and I want a wig and a swift-change.'”

A humorous exchange with Ramsay revealed the source of the fishnets: they belonged to Holland’s grandmother, not his mother as initially speculated.

Holland also shared his father’s initial reservations about the performance. “When I told my dad, he was like, ‘Son, I don’t think that’s an excellent idea.I don’t think you shoudl do that,'” Holland recalled. He explained that his father, Dominic Holland, a comedian and author, was concerned about the potential impact on his burgeoning career. “I think he was just, at that time in my career, he was very worried about me becoming too famous too quickly. So he was really keen for me to not do extra TV shows that I didn’t have to do to try and maintain that part of my childhood.” Holland’s father had previously expressed similar concerns about the intensity of the *Spider-Man* role.

The *Lip Sync Battle* episode featuring Holland and Zendaya originally aired on Spike TV (now Paramount Network) on April 27, 2017, and quickly went viral, solidifying Holland’s reputation for playful self-deprecation and cementing the performance as a memorable pop culture moment.
