NYT Pips puzzle Solved: Tuesday, September 9th Hints adn Solution
Domino enthusiasts faced a moderately challenging “Pips” puzzle from The New York Times today, requiring strategic placement to complete the car-shaped grid. The puzzle, released Tuesday, September 9th, tested players’ spatial reasoning and numerical deduction skills.
The solution, detailed by puzzle solver Erik Kain on Forbes, began with strategically placing the 6/2 domino into the Purple 2 tile and the 6/5 domino into the Pink 20 group, followed by the 5/5 domino at the base of Pink 20. Progressing to the car’s trunk (Green 6 group), the solver utilized 3-pip and 1-pip dominoes to fill the pink 3 and purple = groups respectively. Key moves included placing the 3/1 domino into Dark Blue 1 and the 3/6 domino into Blue 24, alongside the 6/6 domino at the base of Blue 24 and the 6/1 domino into a free tile – a placement initially attempted in the Orange ≠ group.
The final stages involved completing the front of the car with dominoes like the 5/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 1/1, before finishing with the 1/2 and 3/2 dominoes in the Pink 3 and final free tile, respectively. Kain noted the Orange ≠ group presented a slight challenge, but ultimately found the puzzle simpler than the previous day’s iteration.
