Eagan, MN – Minnesota Vikings tight end TJ Hockenson is entering the 2025 season with renewed confidence and ambitious goals, fueled by his recovery from a knee injury and a promising connection with sophomore quarterback JJ McCarthy. Hockenson, 28, is determined to reclaim his position among the league’s elite at his position and contribute to a Vikings playoff push. After being limited to ten games in the 2024 season due to ACL recovery, Hockenson is focused on returning to the form he displayed in 2023, when he recorded 95 receptions for 960 yards and 5 touchdowns. His return is notably crucial as the Vikings transition to McCarthy, the team’s first-round draft pick from 2024 who did not see game action as a rookie.
“I am one of the best Tight Ends in the League in terms of routes,” Hockenson stated, as reported by NBC Sports. “I am proud to create separation, and that’s what I do on Sunday. There have been times in my career where I had to take up challenges, but I have always managed to bounce back and become a better player than before.”
Hockenson expressed high expectations for McCarthy, drawing comparisons to former quarterbacks Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) and Kirk Cousins. “JJ looks very much like Staff and a little in Kirk,” Hockenson said. “It all depends on the trajectories and what we do.I want you to be here at that time, but at the same time, I want you to stand out. I’ll trust you.”
Beyond individual performance, Hockenson emphasized his commitment to team success. “I have a lot of goals, and they meet my expectations,” he added. “I obviously want to be the best Tight End in this league.I want to be the best player in this league, but I also try to be the best teammate possible.”
The Vikings, who reached the playoffs in 2024 with Sam Darnold at quarterback but were eliminated in the first round, will rely heavily on Hockenson and McCarthy as they aim for a deeper postseason run in the upcoming season.
