Eau Claire, WI – The UW-Eau Claire wrestling team dominated at its home tournament Saturday, securing a decisive victory and showcasing the strength of its roster, especially among its newest members.
Eight Blugolds finished in third place or higher, highlighted by first-years Gavin Hanrahan, Briar Ivey, and Jackson Peak, each earning third place in their respective weight divisions. The tournament provided valuable competitive experience for younger wrestlers as the team prepares for a season of dual matches.
“For those guys who are filling vacant spots, its really vital for them to dip your toes in a little bit,” said head coach Pepple.
The Blugolds navigated a busy tournament schedule with three mats for male wrestlers and two for female wrestlers,at times having three wrestlers competing simultaneously. The team’s ability to support each other was key to their success.
“Our guys do a really good job of stepping in there and taking a corner if we have a lot of guys wrestling simultaneously occurring,” noted assistant coach fader.
UW-Eau Claire has participated in four tournaments this season, including a 49-0 dual match victory over UW-Oshkosh on Nov. 12. Fader explained the tournament was structured to give younger wrestlers opportunities for matches before more dual competitions begin.
“As the season goes on, your opportunities for your entire group gets smaller and smaller,” fader said. “It’s honestly a good situation as it shows you have a strength in numbers.”
The Blugolds will continue competition in Eau Claire at the Super Quad tournament at The Sonnentag on Thursday, Dec. 4.
