Šulc’s Double Not Enough as Lyon Falls to Nice, Player Expresses Frustration
NICE, France – despite a brace from Jan Šulc, olympique Lyonnais suffered a defeat against OGC Nice, falling further from the Ligue 1 summit. Šulc’s goals, in the 29th and 50th minutes, were answered by Nice, leaving the Lyon squad and coaching staff deeply disappointed with the result.
The loss marks Lyon’s second consecutive defeat, squandering an opportunity to reclaim the top spot in Ligue 1. Šulc, who joined Lyon from Pilsen in August, has now scored three goals in the French league, but expressed a desire for team success over personal accolades.
Šulc opened the scoring in the 29th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick delivered by Adam Karabec and headed in after a challenge with the nice goalkeeper. He then leveled the score again in the 50th minute, converting a cross from the right wing. However, Nice proved resilient, ultimately securing the win.
“I would certainly be happier if I didn’t score, but we won,” Šulc stated post-match. “The most vital thing is the team. But it was difficult to get through offensively. nice had five defenders at the back, there wasn’t much space.I believe that we will learn from this defeat so that it doesn’t happen again.”
Assistant coach Jorge Maciel echoed Šulc’s frustration, lamenting missed opportunities. “I’m very disappointed. This was already the third game we should have won, but we have nothing. At the same time, we held the trump cards in our hands - we equalized, we had a penalty at the beginning of the second half. But we didn’t give it away and then we let two cheap goals go to us. we will have to go back to what led us to success at the beginning of the season. That is, consistent defense, responsibility, enthusiasm.”
Footmercato.net rated Šulc as Lyon’s best player in the match, awarding him a 6.5 out of 10, while Karabec, who played 68 minutes, received a score of four.
