World Cup 2026 Draw Spreads Over Two Days Due to Logistical complexity

WASHINGTON ‍D.C. – For the first time in World Cup history, FIFA will conduct the tournament draw over two consecutive days, beginning Friday, ⁣December 5 in Washington, ⁣D.C. While the groups will be determined Friday evening, the ‌complete⁣ schedule – including match locations and kick-off times ⁢- won’t be revealed until‍ saturday, December 6.

The unprecedented two-day format stems from ⁤the logistical challenges of hosting the‌ expanded 48-team⁤ tournament across⁢ 16 cities in ‍three countries: Mexico, Canada,⁢ and the united States. FIFA faces a complex puzzle of coordinating travel distances,⁤ navigating⁤ time zones, ⁤and accommodating broadcast‌ schedules to optimize the experience for both stadium attendees‌ and‍ television‌ viewers.

The initial draw at the Kennedy Center on Friday at 6 p.m.‌ belgian time ‌will ⁢establish the twelve groups. However, determining the full ⁣schedule requires additional⁢ analysis.‌ “This gives us time to⁣ work out the best locations and times for both fans in the stadiums and viewers at ⁤home,”⁣ FIFA stated.

Currently, only⁤ the host nations’ groups (A,B,and D) have confirmed ⁤host cities, but even those locations ⁣lack assigned kick-off⁤ times. The complete ⁤schedule will be unveiled during a ⁣Saturday broadcast at 6 p.m. Belgian time, featuring ‌FIFA President Gianni Infantino and prominent figures from the football world.

Fans can⁢ follow both draws live‍ on ⁤Sporza.be.
