Save on Power Bills with New Government Battery Program
Wagga Wagga, NSW - September 4, 2025 – Homeowners and small businesses in Wagga Wagga can now significantly reduce electricity costs with the launch of the Australian governments Cheaper Home Batteries Program. The initiative, rolled out nationally in July, offers eligible customers around 30 per cent off the upfront cost of installing a small-scale solar battery system.
Delivered by the Clean Energy Regulator, the program aims to increase access to affordable renewable energy by enabling locals to store solar power for use during peak demand. Wagga Wagga currently boasts over 10,000 rooftop solar PV systems, but battery uptake has been low, with only 40 households currently utilizing battery storage due to high initial costs.
The discount is applied directly by installers at the point of purchase, providing immediate savings. “This program represents a fantastic opportunity for local families to maximise their solar investment and reduce electricity bills,” said Hemendra Chaudhary, Council’s Net Zero Emissions Project Officer. “The batteries can store excess solar energy and allow access to renewable energy even if the sun is not shining.”
customers can further benefit by joining the NSW Government’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP) network through the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, unlocking additional financial incentives for selling stored energy back to the grid when demand is high.
To qualify for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, systems must:
Have a total capacity between 5kWh and 100 kWh
Be connected to an existing or new rooftop solar system
Be installed by an accredited installer meeting all state and territory electrical safety standards
Be listed on the Clean Energy Council’s approved product list and have VPP capability (participation in VPP is optional).
