Freshman’s Clutch Plays Lift UNC to Historic Win Over Kentucky
LEXINGTON, KY – University of North Carolina freshman Derek Dixon delivered two critical plays in the final minute to secure a 89-84 victory over the University of Kentucky Wednesday night in the ACC/SEC Challenge, giving the Tar Heels a program-record 26 wins against the Wildcats. Dixon’s performance came despite early shooting struggles and with teammate Kyan Evans battling foul trouble.
Dixon initially struggled, making only one of his first six shots. However, he responded with a crucial three-pointer when the team’s designed play broke down. “We weren’t able to get the shot we were looking for,” UNC head coach Hubert Davis said. “At that time, you have to make a play. And he did.” Dixon confirmed, “The play didn’t work out and I had to make a play. The shot clock was low, and that’s the kind of thing I work on all the time.”
With the game tied, Dixon was again called upon, this time utilizing a high ball screen. He demonstrated patience, allowing the play to develop and driving to the basket for a game-winning layup. Davis noted the team trusts Dixon to capitalize when he has an advantage, stating, “If he has an angle and an edge, we want him to go ahead and finish it.” Options were available – Henri veesaar was playing well and Wilson coudl have attempted a dunk - but Dixon made the decisive move.
The victory marked the Tar Heels’ 26th against Kentucky, surpassing any other non-SEC opponent. The team’s party was immediate and energetic, with players sprinting back to the locker room following Dixon’s postgame interview. Teammate Seth Trimble enthusiastically praised Dixon’s performance, exclaiming, “Derek, you are one bad…” before quickly apologizing for his language in the presence of bystanders.
