Two venezuelan Activists Injured in Colombia Attack,Authorities Investigate
BOGOTÁ,Colombia – Two Venezuelan citizens, including activist Luis Peche, were injured in an attack in Colombia, according to Venezuelan human rights institution Provea and reports from Colombian authorities. The incident has sparked condemnation from Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and a response from Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
The attack comes amid ongoing political tensions in Venezuela and a important influx of Venezuelan migrants and asylum seekers into Colombia. The injuries to prominent activists raise concerns about the safety of Venezuelan nationals in Colombia and the potential for politically motivated violence. Colombian authorities have initiated an investigation, but have yet to release details regarding the circumstances of the attack or the current status of the injured individuals.
According to Provea, the second injured Venezuelan citizen is activist luis Peche, though his condition remains unclear. CNN has reached out to the Colombian Prosecutor’s Office for further details but has not yet received a response.
Machado condemned the attack on Monday, calling for a “exhaustive, transparent and urgent investigation” from Colombian authorities and the government of President Petro. ”We ask…to clarify the facts, identify those responsible and guarantee justice,” she stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.
president Petro, without providing evidence, attributed the attack to organized crime and reaffirmed his government’s policy of welcoming Venezuelan citizens seeking asylum. “All Venezuelan citizens who want to seek asylum in Colombia, irrespective of their ideas, are welcome,” Petro wrote on X. “No one can say that the government has bothered them whatever their ideas. They have expressed themselves freely and this will continue.”
