Trump Issues Warning About Common Painkiller, Faces Immediate Backlash From Medical Community
WASHINGTON D.C. – Former President Donald Trump has sparked controversy with a recent warning against the use of acetaminophen, commonly known as paracetamol or Tylenol, during pregnancy. The suggestion, issued by the Trump administration and echoed by the Ministry of Health, suggests a link between the painkiller and neurological issues in children. However, the claim has been swiftly and strongly refuted by leading medical organizations and researchers worldwide.
A study involving over 180,000 Swedish children compared those whose mothers took acetaminophen during pregnancy with their siblings whose mothers did not. Researchers found no correlation between acetaminophen intake and an increased risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disabilities.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has vehemently opposed the government’s recommendation, stating it “ignores all scientific knowledge and simplifies the diverse and complex causes of neurological problems in children in a dangerous way.” ACOG released a statement on its website asserting, “It is indeed extremely worrying that our federal health authorities are willing to make an declaration that affects the health and well-being of millions of people without being reliable.”
Kenvue, the company that markets Tylenol, also maintains that scientific data does not support a proven connection between acetaminophen use and autism.
ACOG further criticized the recommendation as “irresponsible” given the “harmful and confusing message” it sends to pregnant patients, particularly those who rely on the medication for pain relief. the organization emphasized that “not a single serious study can prove a connection.”
acetaminophen is a widely used and generally considered safe pain reliever and fever reducer, familiar to families for generations. Autism spectrum disorder is described by experts as a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, dialog, and repetitive behaviors. The causes of autism remain largely unknown.
