Trump Declares ‘War is Over’ as Hostage Release Looms, Peace Summit Begins
JERUSALEM – US President donald Trump has stated that “the war is over” in Gaza, as Israel prepares for the release of 48 hostages held by Hamas. The anticipated handover, scheduled for noon local time (10:00 BST) today, marks a critical juncture in the ceasefire agreement brokered by the US, Egypt, and qatar. Of the 48 hostages, 20 are believed to be alive and will receive immediate medical attention before reuniting with families, while the bodies of 28 others are expected to be returned.
The deal’s success offers a potential turning point in the conflict, bringing a temporary halt to months of intense fighting and opening a path - however fragile – toward broader peace negotiations. In exchange for the hostages, Israel will release 250 Palestinian prisoners, including individuals serving life sentences, alongside over 1,700 detainees held without charge, some of whom are children. The unfolding events are set against the backdrop of a US-hosted peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where Trump will convene with at least 20 world leaders.
Trump arrived in Israel to a welcoming reception, with President Isaac Herzog stating he would be greeted by “masses of Israelis with gratitude and friendship.” The American president is scheduled to address Israel’s parliament before traveling to Egypt.
Aid deliveries are also underway, with trucks crossing the border into Gaza to assist Palestinians returning to the devastated north, where much of Gaza City has been reduced to rubble. The situation remains precarious, and the long-term implications of the ceasefire and summit remain to be seen.
