Toledo Doctor Suspended After Allegedly Forcing Abortion medication on Girlfriend
TOLEDO, OH – The medical license of dr. Hassan-James Abbas, a surgical resident at the University of Toledo, has been suspended by the State Medical Board of Ohio following allegations he illegally obtained abortion medication and coerced his girlfriend into taking it against her will. The suspension, effective November 5th, has also resulted in Abbas being placed on administrative leave by the university.
According to documents released by the medical board, the alleged incident unfolded after Abbas separated from his wife in October 2024 and began a relationship with a woman identified as “Patient 1.” When she informed him of her pregnancy in December, Abbas reportedly expressed a desire for her to terminate the pregnancy, a desire she did not share.
The board alleges that the following day, Abbas used his estranged wife’s personal information – without her knowledge or consent – to order prescription abortion medication from an out-of-state provider, paying for the drugs with his own credit card.
Several days later, after the medication arrived, “Patient 1” spent the night at Abbas’s home. The medical board’s report details a disturbing account of Abbas allegedly overpowering the woman and forcibly administering the crushed medication by holding her down and inserting it into her mouth.
The woman reportedly fought back, managing to escape and attempt to call 911, but Abbas allegedly took the phone and disconnected the call. She subsequently sought medical attention, where she was documented as an assault victim.
During an interview with the State Medical Board, Abbas admitted to most of the allegations, including obtaining the medication and administering it to his girlfriend. However, he disputed the manner in which the drugs were ingested, claiming she had consented to taking them. He also admitted to discarding the remaining pills out of his car window on his way to work.
As of today,no criminal charges have been filed against Abbas.
The University of Toledo confirmed it is cooperating with the examination, stating, “The matter under investigation by the state is unrelated to his role at UToledo… UToledo holds its employees to the highest standards of professional conduct and will cooperate with the state medical board’s investigative processes.”
Dr. Abbas has untill December 5th to request a hearing regarding the suspension of his medical license.
