Timo Werner Eyes Inter Miami as Preferred MLS Destination-Report
inter Miami CF has emerged as Timo Werner’s top choice should he pursue a move to Major League Soccer, according to a report surfaced January 26, 2024. The RB Leipzig forward is seeking a new club and views Miami as an attractive landing spot, potentially joining Lionel Messi and bolstering the Herons’ attacking options.
The potential acquisition of Werner hinges on Inter Miami’s Designated Player slots becoming available in 2026. With the planned retirements of club stalwarts Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, alongside the expiring contract of luis Suárez, and the existing commitments to messi and Rodrigo De Paul as Designated Players, a pathway coudl open for Werner to command a salary around $11.6 million-placing him among the league’s highest earners.
Werner’s arrival would fill a critical need for Miami as they prepare for the 2026 MLS season. The club is slated to begin the season February 21 against LAFC, led by Son heung-min, and will officially inaugurate their new Miami Freedom park stadium April 4 with a match against Austin FC.
The report indicates that while a move in the current 2025 window presented logistical challenges, the shifting roster dynamics in 2026 create a viable possibility to integrate a player of Werner’s caliber. His current earnings would necessitate a Designated Player designation, but Miami’s anticipated roster construction leaves one such slot open.
