The summit County Democratic Party will hold a special nominating convention on Thursday, September 25, at 7 p.m. at the Ledges Conference Center in Coalville to fill the vacant position of Summit County Sheriff. The opening comes after Sheriff Frank Smith’s retirement on September 5.Under Utah law,the party has 30 days to present a nominee to the Summit County Council,which will then appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of Smith’s term,ending December 31,2026. The party is currently accepting applications from qualified Democratic candidates until 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, to be submitted via email to party chair Rory Swensen at [email protected].
Candidates must meet specific qualifications outlined in utah Code, including U.S. citizenship,Summit County voter registration,one year of residency,current Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification or waiver eligibility,and adherence to statutory felony requirements.
