## ‘Gisèle Alain‘ Manga Creator Sui Kasai Dies at 52
Manga artist Sui Kasai, best known for her historical series *Gisèle Alain*, passed away on April 21, 2024, at the age of 52. The news was announced sunday on her X (formerly Twitter) account. Kasai is survived by her wife, fellow manga creator Ao Ogino.
Kasai’s death marks a meaningful loss for the manga community, leaving behind a beloved, though unfinished, work that captivated readers with its unique setting and character-driven stories. The planned presentation of a completed side story by *Harta* editors offers a small measure of solace too fans mourning the loss of a talented artist whose career was cut short by health issues.
Kasai launched *Gisèle Alain* in kadokawa’s *Fellows!* magazine (later *Harta*) in 2009. The manga,set in early 20th-century France,follows Gisèle,a teenage girl who manages an apartment building and solves the problems of its residents. The series went on hiatus in 2014 due to Kasai’s declining health and was never resumed, concluding with its fifth volume in 2015. She was nearing completion of a *Gisèle Alain* side story at the time of her death, which *Harta* editors intend to publish for fans.
Prior to *Gisèle Alain*, Kasai created the short manga anthology *Tsukiyo no Toratsugumi*, published by Kadokawa in 2011. She also contributed numerous one-shot stories to *Harta* and other anthology collections, including *Tsukiyo no Toratsugami* (2011) and *Story of Carocheila* (2018), the latter of which was released in two volumes.
