Title: Spotify Lawsuit: Drake Accused of Billions in Fake Streams
Spotify Sued Over Alleged Billions in Fake Drake Streams
A new class-action lawsuit filed in California District Court accuses Spotify of knowingly allowing widespread streaming fraud, alleging that a significant portion of Drake’s reported streams are inauthentic. The suit, brought by rapper RBX-a cousin of Snoop Dogg-claims Spotify is prioritizing profit over the fair compensation of legitimate artists and rightsholders.
The lawsuit asserts that between January 2022 and September 2025, a “substantial” and “non-trivial percentage” of Drake’s approximately 37 billion Spotify streams during that period were generated by bot accounts. This alleged manipulation of streaming numbers directly impacts revenue distribution, diverting funds from artists who rely on genuine listener engagement. The case highlights growing concerns within the music industry about the prevalence of artificial streams and the platforms’ responsibility to combat them.
According to the filing,Spotify is “all too happy to turn a blind eye” to the fraudulent activity. RBX is listed as the lead plaintiff, though Spotify is the sole defendant named in the suit. The complaint details how these bot networks siphon royalties away from smaller artists and creators who build audiences organically.
The lawsuit alleges the streaming fraud causes “massive financial harm to legitimate artists, songwriters, producers, and other rightsholders.” A representative for Drake has not yet responded to requests for comment. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how streaming platforms address and regulate artificial streaming activity, potentially reshaping the economics of the music industry.
