Spain Confines Poultry as Bird Flu Concerns Rise, Expert Warns of Potential Human-Seasonal Flu Combination
Madrid, Spain – February 29, 2024 - The Spanish government has ordered the confinement of all poultry farms nationwide, effective instantly, in response to a recent surge in highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) cases. The move aims to prevent further spread of the virus among bird populations and mitigate the risk of transmission to humans.
Epidemiologist Susana Monge warned that the co-circulation of avian and seasonal influenza viruses presents the “greatest risk,” perhaps leading to reassortment and the emergence of a novel virus with increased transmissibility and virulence. This growth comes as outbreaks continue to be detected across Europe, raising concerns about a wider public health threat. The confinement measures require all poultry to be kept indoors, or under netting where outdoor access is essential, to minimize contact with wild birds – the primary reservoir for the virus.
Monge emphasized the importance of vigilance and proactive measures, stating that while current avian flu strains pose a limited risk to humans, the possibility of viral recombination is a meaningful concern. “If the avian flu and seasonal flu viruses coexist, they can exchange genetic material, creating a new virus that could be more easily transmitted between people and potentially more risky,” she explained.
The Ministry of Agriculture,Fisheries and Food confirmed that several outbreaks have been identified in recent weeks, primarily affecting backyard poultry and smaller farms. The confinement order applies to all bird farms regardless of size or production type, and will remain in effect until further notice, subject to ongoing risk assessment.Authorities are urging farmers to implement strict biosecurity measures, including enhanced hygiene protocols and monitoring for signs of illness in their flocks.
