Sinner Jokingly Warned Mother After Roland Garros Loss: “It Was Her Last Chance”
PARIS – Jannik Sinner revealed a playful warning issued to his mother following his defeat in the 2024 Roland Garros final against Carlos Alcaraz, suggesting it was her “last chance” to attend one of his matches. The revelation came during an interview with Sky Sports, detailing a pact made with his mother regarding her attendance at his Grand Slam finals.
sinner recounted that his mother, Siglinde, told him years prior, “I don’t want to be in your box, but if you play a Grand Slam final in Europe I want to be there.” Sinner initially dismissed the possibility, stating, “I laughed, I told him it would never happen.”
However, after reaching the Roland Garros final - a match lasting five hours and 29 minutes – Sinner called his mother, who promptly booked a flight.”I reached the final of Roland Garros, I called her and she told me she was coming tomorrow,” he said.Despite her presence,Sinner lost the match. He also noted his mother attended the Rome final, where he also suffered a defeat.
Before Wimbledon, Sinner confessed he almost cautioned his mother against attending, fearing another loss. “When he told me he was coming to Wimbledon I didn’t tell him but I wanted to tell him that it was his last chance,” Sinner stated.
Sinner, currently ranked as the world number one and holding four Grand Slam titles, is the son of Johann and Siglinde, who worked as a chef and waitress, respectively, at a ski lodge. He currently boasts a 26-match winning streak on indoor courts and will aim for a repeat championship at the ATP Finals.
