SIH Employees Mobilize to Combat Rising Food⁤ Insecurity ‍Across Southern Illinois

Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) employees are launching⁢ widespread initiatives ⁤to address growing hunger⁤ needs within their communities, responding to increased ‍demand at local food banks and assisting colleagues⁢ facing hardship. From ‌hospital campuses to clinics, teams are organizing donations, food drives,‍ and‌ establishing on-site resources to support patients and fellow staff.

The surge in charitable giving comes as organizations ‌like the Victory Dream Center in Carbondale report a‍ 25% increase in requests for assistance, largely attributed to delays in SNAP benefits. ‍This escalating food insecurity impacts vulnerable populations and underscores the critical role healthcare systems play in addressing social‍ determinants of health. SIH’s coordinated efforts aim‌ to provide immediate relief⁣ and build lasting support networks throughout the region.

Employees at SIH ⁤St.Joseph Memorial Hospital recently contributed $2,000 to the Murphysboro Food Pantry, while SIH Herrin Hospital is currently hosting a Thanksgiving food ⁢drive specifically for employees‌ in need.

At SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, teams are actively assembling complete Thanksgiving meal kits for local families. Further south, SIH ⁣Harrisburg⁢ Medical Center has established an on-site food bank to directly assist patients and‍ employees experiencing food insecurity.

The SIH Cancer Institute is spearheading a month-long food drive ⁣benefiting the Victory Dream Center, recognizing the heightened need within the Carbondale area. Simultaneously, the SIH ‌System Office, in collaboration with SIH leaders, the‍ SIH Foundation,⁤ and SIH Community benefits, is conducting a “Stuff the Pantry” ⁤drive to benefit the ⁣good Samaritan Food Pantry and other regional organizations.
