Shein Pulls ‘Child-Like’ Sex Dolls amid Outcry, Faces Potential French Ban
Shein has removed advertisements for sex dolls resembling children from its platform and launched an internal investigation following widespread condemnation. The controversy erupted days before the fast-fashion retailer was set to open its first permanent brick-and-mortar store in Paris, prompting a direct threat from French officials.
The scandal underscores growing scrutiny of Shein’s product offerings and business practices. Beyond the immediate concerns surrounding the dolls, the company already faces criticism regarding the environmental impact of its rapid production cycles and the labor conditions within its supply chain. The incident has ignited protests and raises questions about the responsibility of online marketplaces to vet products and prevent the sale of exploitative items.
French Finance Minister Roland Lescure warned Shein that it could be barred from operating in France if it continues to sell the controversial products.Protests against the dolls were held at the BHV department store and in front of Paris City Hall in anticipation of the Shein store’s opening this week.
Shein stated it removed the advertisements as soon as it became aware of the issue. The company’s response comes as it navigates increasing pressure from consumers and regulators regarding its business model.
