Seth Rogen Reveals He’s Turning Down A-List directors eager to Appear on ‘Teh Studio’
Following a critically acclaimed and award-winning first season, co-creator and star Seth Rogen is facing a unique challenge: turning down celebrated directors who want to cameo on his Apple TV+ series, The Studio. The show, a satirical look inside the Hollywood machine, has become a coveted platform for filmmakers, evidenced by recent appearances from Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Sarah Polley, Olivia Wilde, Zack Snyder, Aaron Sorkin, and Parker Finn.
Rogen detailed the unusual situation in a recent interview with GQ, describing the experience as “very meta” and admitting he’s essentially running a “fake movie studio.” Agents are now pitching their director clients for roles directing fictional films within the show, but Rogen and his team are carefully curating appearances to fit the show’s narrative. The success of The Studio-which recently earned Rogen four Emmy awards in september-has even led to industry professionals regretting past rejections of the actor-writer-producer.
“It does feel like I’m running a fake movie studio at times,” Rogen told GQ. “I’m having directors’ agents call me to pitch their clients to be the directors of fake movies on our show, which is very weird and very meta. And I’m having to actually turn down directors I’m a big fan of because the movie, the fake movie, maybe isn’t quite right for the fake package we have in our heads. So yeah-it’s gotten very strange.”
Rogen added that several industry figures approached him at the Emmys to express regret over previously declining to participate in the series, a sentiment he found “very meaningful.” “That’s all I want-for people to regret not working with me,” he joked.
The Studio is co-created by Evan Goldberg, Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, and Frida Perez.
