SBB ‍orders 116 Double-DeckerTrains to Expand Capacity

Bern, Switzerland – November 8, 2024 – Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has ordered 116 new double-decker⁣ trains ‌from Stadler ⁢Rail, a meaningful investment aimed at bolstering capacity and modernizing its long-distance fleet. The⁢ order, finalized today, represents one of the largest rail vehicle procurements in SBB’s history and will substantially​ increase seating options for passengers across switzerland.

This substantial​ fleet renewal⁢ addresses growing passenger numbers and​ the increasing demand for comfortable, reliable rail ⁢travel. The new trains, slated to begin operation in 2028, will primarily serve high-traffic routes,‍ reducing congestion and improving connectivity throughout the country. Approximately 20 ‌percent of the⁣ seating capacity on each train will be⁢ allocated ‍to first class. The total investment underscores‌ SBB’s commitment to sustainable transportation and its role in facilitating economic growth​ by⁢ providing efficient travel⁢ options.

Each train will accommodate around‌ 540 passengers and measure approximately 150 meters in ⁣length. The trains will ‌feature ⁢exclusively low-floor entrances​ for⁣ ease of access, alongside 24 entry doors – 12 per side – and two ‍entry platforms per car.Dedicated spaces for ⁣16 ⁣bicycles will be distributed across eight multifunctional‌ zones.​

Passenger comfort and‍ accessibility are key‌ priorities in the⁢ new design. The trains will include two toilets, one of wich‌ will​ be wheelchair accessible. Locomotive crews⁢ will benefit‍ from ⁣separate doors for driver’s cabs.⁢ The ​new double-decker trains are capable of‌ reaching a maximum speed of 160 ‍km/h.
