Title: Rupiah Fluctuates Amid Fed Rate Cut Hopes and US Economic Concerns

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Jakarta, Indonesia – September 8, 2025 – The Indonesian rupiah experienced intraday volatility against the US dollar today, initially strengthening before closing with a slight depreciation. As of 12:49 WIB (western Indonesian Time), the rupiah traded at Rp16,361 per US dollar, a 0.09% or 14.6-point decline from it’s opening value.

The rupiah’s performance is closely watched by Indonesian businesses, consumers, and policymakers, as fluctuations impact import costs, inflation, and overall economic stability. A weaker rupiah can increase the price of imported goods, perhaps fueling inflationary pressures, while a stronger rupiah can benefit importers and help control inflation. The currency’s movements also influence foreign investment flows and the country’s trade balance.

Trading commenced at 09:24 WIB with the rupiah posting gains, rising 0.26% or 43.5 points to Rp16,389 per US dollar, according to bloomberg data. Simultaneously, the US dollar index edged up 0.07% to 97.83.

Several other Asian currencies also saw strengthening during the opening hours of trading. The Hong Kong dollar gained 0.02%, the Taiwan dollar increased by 0.23%, the Singapore dollar rose 0.01%, the Philippine peso strengthened 0.24%, the Malaysian ringgit added 0.26%, and the Thai baht increased 0.03%.
