Spider Field Hockey Shuts Out Queens in Sunday Showdown
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Richmond Spider field hockey team secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Queens University Charlotte on Sunday, extending their winning streak and solidifying their position in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The win improves Richmond’s overall record too 8-5 and their league record to 3-1.
The spiders’ dominant performance showcased a potent offensive attack and a steadfast defence, setting the stage for their upcoming Homecoming Weekend contest. Richmond will return to Crenshaw Field on Friday,Oct. 17, to face Saint Joseph’s (7-5, 2-1) at 5 p.m. in an Atlantic 10 matchup broadcast on ESPN+.
Richmond broke the scoreless tie in the 20th minute with a well-executed play initiated by Sarah Ellis, who sent the ball to Lainey Nichols. Nichols then delivered a cross into the circle, finding Clara Larripa for a diving score – her team-leading 12th goal of the season. nichols was credited with her second assist of the year.
The Spiders continued to apply pressure in the second half, extending their led in the 32nd minute.Off a restart, Jess McMeeking found Valen Luna Paratore, who drew defenders before passing to Reese Miller for her second career goal. Luna Paratore earned her second assist of the season.
Emma Williams extended Richmond’s advantage in the 39th minute, gaining possession from a defensive scrum and driving into the circle to find Luna paratore for her second goal of the season. Williams recorded her first assist of the year.
Goalkeeper Amanda Cimillo secured her fourth clean sheet of the season, making two saves in 49 minutes of play. Thea Conomikes added two saves in 11 minutes of action during the fourth quarter. Richmond outshot Queens 11-7, with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, and earned 5 penalty corners to Queens’ 4.
