Rhule Discusses Strategic Approach to 2024 Signing Class
University of Nebraska Head Coach Matt Rhule detailed the beliefs behind the Huskers’ 2024 recruiting class on signing day, emphasizing a focus on specific needs and “difference makers.”
Rhule highlighted the importance of special teams, noting, “This is a windy place and this is a difficult place. We needed someone we thought could contribute,” referring to the addition of a place kicker, supported by coach Mike Ekeler’s efforts to build a strong kicking room.
At wide receiver, the team targeted both size and versatility. Nalin Scott was brought in as a “big outside guy,” while Larry Miles offers the ability to play both inside and outside, described as “really competitive.” Rhule expressed excitement about running back Jamal Rule, stating, “we like the running back room and Jamal was a premier guy on a board and we were able to get him and hold on to him,” referencing the team’s success running the football this season.
The tight end room was also a focus, with Luke Lindenmeyer already working with the group. Rhule praised Luke Sorensen’s work in securing a tight end capable of playing both the ‘Y’ and flex positions, calling it “hard to find guys who can do both.”
Defensively, the strategy centered on stopping the run and preventing explosive plays. Danny Odem III, described as ”one of the premier corners in the country,” was a priority, with Rhule stating he was a “no brainer guy that we went all in on.” Jace Reynolds, who received an offer after attending a camp, was also highlighted for his potential to play multiple positions – inside and outside.
Rhule emphasized the selective nature of this recruiting class, given the team’s existing roster size and youth. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to build the 2027 class, anticipating it will be “special.” He believes many of the incoming players have the “mindset” to contribute early.
Bowl Game Practice Schedule
Rhule also outlined the bowl game practice schedule, beginning Monday. He contrasted the current situation with previous years spent on the road recruiting and managing the transfer portal, noting the chance to focus on player growth. ”Next week will really be a lot more development,” he saeid, highlighting the potential for younger players to “bust through.”
He used Emmett Johnson’s development – from rotational player to starter and potential award winner – as an example of the growth possible within the program.Rhule anticipates othre players will experience similar breakthroughs. The team will have a week of development and readiness, followed by time off for Christmas, with a potential December 31st bowl game requiring travel on December 26th.
