Reusable Water Bottles Can Harbor More Bacteria Than a Toilet seat, Doctor Warns
November 30, 2025 – A growing trend towards lasting living wiht reusable thermoses might potentially be creating an unexpected health hazard, according to Doctor Alberto Negrete. A recent study highlighted by the physician reveals these popular water bottles can accumulate bacteria levels exceeding those found on toilet seats if not cleaned daily.
The increasing use of thermoses - favored for convenience, reducing single-use plastic waste, adn maintaining beverage temperature – presents a risk many users are unaware of. Repeated contact between the mouth and the bottle’s opening during drinking deposits bacteria, which then multiplies with continued use.
“A study showed that every time we take water, that little contact, no matter how small it may seem, leaves bacteria in the termo and these begin to multiply,” explained Dr. Negrete. He emphasized that neglecting daily cleaning allows bacterial populations to reach “alarming levels.”
The study directly compared bacterial counts in thermoses to those found on toilet surfaces. The results were stark: “On average, there were more bacteria in the thermoses than in the toilets,” the specialist warned.
While reusable bottles offer environmental benefits and promote hydration – essential for overall health – Dr. Negrete stresses the importance of safe consumption. His recommendation is straightforward: wash your reusable termo every day to prevent the growth of potentially harmful microorganisms.
