Rangers Manager Search Takes New Turn as Steven Gerrard declines Return, Danny Röhl Emerges as Potential Candidate
Glasgow, Scotland – Rangers Football Club’s search for a new manager has taken an unexpected turn after Steven gerrard ruled himself out of a return to Ibrox, opening the door for Danny Röhl to become a leading contender. The development comes just days after Russell Martin was sacked following a disappointing 123-day tenure, culminating in a draw against Falkirk on Sunday.
Gerrard, who previously managed Rangers between 2018 and 2021, engaged in discussions with a club delegation and travelled to meet with representatives, signaling initial interest in the position.Though, the former Liverpool captain has indicated that now is not the right time for him to resume managerial duties at the Scottish club, having recently left Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia in late January and currently based in Bahrain. This decision represents a setback for Rangers, where Gerrard enjoyed meaningful support from fans during his previous spell.
The club is now focusing on Röhl, who held talks with Rangers’ ownership group at the end of last week. Röhl was previously considered for the role before Martin’s appointment in June. The 36-year-old’s recent managerial experiance includes a spell at Sheffield Wednesday, which was impacted by off-field financial difficulties, and prior coaching roles at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, southampton, and the German national team.
Sean Dyche, another manager previously linked to the vacancy, has also reportedly expressed a lack of interest in the position. Rangers observers have noted Röhl’s lack of experience within Scottish football as a potential concern. The club has not yet offered the job to any candidate as of this reporting.
